1up Trainer Instructions

Your new 1up Trainer comes fully assembled and ready to use.  It has been pre-set to fit most bicycles; however some adjustments may be necessary.  Complete step-by-step instructions with photos are listed below.

Bicycles come with many different types of quick releases. It is not possible to design a trainer that would work with all types of quick releases. Therefore, we have included a quick release for your bicycle and recommend that you install it.  See your Bicycle Owners Manual for proper Quick Release operation.  Be sure your bicycle tires are fully inflated (see side of tire for maximum tire pressure).

Step 1.  Unfold the two telescoping front legs until they lock into place.  To fold the legs down, push the silver cap on the side of the leg inward.

Step 2.  Screw the Black Roller Knobs up.  Lower the resistance unit down until it stops. Be careful that the resistance unit does not fall down on its own!

Step 3.  The telescoping legs can be adjusted by turning the knobs at the top of the round legs.

Step 4.  Open the trainer RED quick release (Q-R) handle by pushing it up toward the spring and turning it outward.

Step 5.  Rotate the trainer Q-R lever until it stops at approximately the 12 o’clock position.  Back your bicycle into the trainer.

Step 6.  Hold your bicycle up to the trainer and align the right trainer axle cup with the right side nut of the quick release or axle nut on your bicycle.  Be sure the Resistance Unit is down all of the way!  Lightly close the Q-R lever until the left axle cup captures the axle handle and stops at the 7 o’clock position (see photo below).  Then push on the trainer Q-R lever until it locks the bike tightly at the 6 o’clock position.  Return Q-R Lever to safety riding position (see photo below).   If the Q-R Lever stops a lot before or after the 7 o’clock position, see Step 10 to adjust the axle cup.

Step 7.  While pushing the resistance unit into the tire with your left hand, tighten the black roller knobs clockwise as tight as you can.  Ride the bicycle and while you’re in top gear try to pedal as hard as you can.  If the tire slips on the roller, then push the roller harder into the tire and tighten the knobs a little more.  Be sure to keep your tire and the trainer roller clean and free of oil.

Step 8.  With the bicycle loaded, turn the telescoping knobs clockwise to lower the rear wheel closer to the floor (see photo step 3).  Adjust both telescoping legs so trainer sits evenly.  Check that the tire does not touch the floor when the rider is on the bicycle.  If you are training on carpet, use extra floor clearance due to carpet compression.

You are now ready to use your new 1up Trainer

Step 9If your bicycle has 26 inch or smaller wheels a vertical height adjustment may be necessary. If the wheel is not at the desired height above the floor when the telescoping front legs are fully retracted, the axle cup assemblies should be lowered.  For a 20” wheel the 8th hole from the top should be used.  See step 10.  Be sure the height of the holes used on each side is the same.  For 16”wheels use lowest holes.

Step 10.  To adjust the axle cup clamping tension, loosen the nuts closest to the blue upright arm using the silver tool. If more clamping tension is needed, turn the cup on the right (looking from the back) counter-clockwise in small increments and then tighten the nut.  Try loading your bicycle and check where the trainer Q-R lever stops when lightly closed.  This is a one-time adjustment for that particular bicycle.  Test your bicycle to be sure that it is securely attached to the trainer, and the trainer

Q-R Lever is at 6 o’clock.  Before riding your bike on the trainer, check to see that the Q-R Lever is in the Safety Riding Position.

WARNING!  DO NOT USE YOUR REAR BRAKE WHEN RIDING ON THE TRAINER THIS MAY DAMAGE YOUR TIRE.

CAUTION: DO NOT touch the Resistance Unit while it is spinning.  Also, the Resistance Unit may GET HOT during normal use.  DO NOT touch the Resistance Unit until it has a chance to cool down. USE CAUTION if children are around during training.  If you have any questions or comments, please call 1up USA 608-568-7261 email@1upusa.com

Enjoy the ride!

Resistance Modification Instructions (not for the Black Flywheel Model)

The resistance can be changed in your 1up Trainer (with Silver Flywheel).  To increase/decrease the resistance in the unit, follow the instructions and photos below.

Step 1.  Use the silver wrench provided to remove the axle bolt with lock washer (right side of unit).  The silver wrench is located on the right blue leg held on by a black knob (turn counter clockwise to remove).

Step 2.  To disassemble the Unit, pivot the right RU Bar out of the way. Remove the Spacer, O-Ring, Friction Pad Plate, Spring, Disk and the 3 Steel Balls.

Step 3.  Turn the trainer on its side.  To increase the resistance, place the 3 balls in the outer pockets.  (The trainer comes with the balls in the inner pockets.) To increase the resistance even more, place all 6 balls in all 6 pockets.  The 3 additional Balls are located in the Plastic Bag inside the right Rubber Foot (2005 model only).

Step 4.  Slide the Disk back on the axle and line up the Drive Pin Holes so it fits together.  Slide the Spring, Pad Plate and then the O-Ring and Spacer on the Axle.  Be sure the Spring is between the Disk and the Pad Plate.  The Axle should come all the way through the Plate, O-Ring and Spacer.

Step 5.  While holding the unit together, line up the RU Bar and replace the Axle Bolt.  When the bolt is started, line up the Pad Plate Hole with the RU Bar Pin and tighten the bolt.  Be sure the axle is through the spacer.
